The story
Mason introduced us to Arms Aloft in May of 2021, and it didn’t take long for that record to take over the van. Aaron has listened to that one album more than any other record in the last several years — maybe more than everything else combined.
“The Truth Is Out There” was the song that grabbed him first. It reaches out from the very first line and conveys a sense of urgent desperation about the way things are in the world, and at the same time a kind of resigned helplessness that there’s not really anything any of us can do about it. Aaron likes it because it’s so edgy it almost makes him uncomfortable, and that’s pretty hard to do.
For Keegan it was in heavy rotation from the first listen, and it wasn’t long before somebody brought it up as a cover opportunity. That was an easy yes from everybody in the band. It hits you right in the face out of the gate and it doesn’t let up until the very end.
It’s also about as far as you can get from what we’re used to playing. The song is essentially one big drum fill from front to back, which made it a chance to dig into big fills and punk beats and a side of our punk roots we don’t often get to show. It took us a long time to learn.
When we had studio time booked and no originals finished and ready to go, the decision was immediate and unanimous — this was the song we wanted to take in and put together. If the only thing that comes of us recording it is that Arms Aloft picks up a few more listeners, we’ll be more than happy with that.
